Behavior of Gases Vocabulary
Kinetic Theory - A theory saying that: everything is made up of small particles that are always in motion
Kinetic Energy - Energy coming from whenever an object is in motion
Gas Pressure - A form of pressure made by gases when their particles collide together.
Atmospheric Pressure - A form of pressure released by air molecules when they collide together
Barometers - Devices used to measure atmospheric pressure
Kelvin Temperature - Unlike Celsius, this temperature scale has a proportional connection to a gas's kinetic energy
Absolute Zero - The temperature where there is no particle movement at all (0º Celsius or 273 Kelvin)
STP - Standard Temperature & Pressure; A set of temperature and pressure calculations for gases:
Standard Temperature: 0ºC = 273K & Standard Pressure: 1 atm = 760 mm Hg = 760 torr = 101.3 kPa
Boyle's Law - Law that examines gases when the PRESSURE and VOLUME of the gas change; P1V1=P2V2
Charle's Law - Law that examines gases when the VOLUME and TEMPERATURE of the gas change; V1/T1=V2/T2
Gay-Lussac's Law - Law that examines gases when the PRESSURE and TEMPERATURE of the gas change; P1/T1=P2/T2
Combined Gas Law - A law combining Charles's Law, Boyle's Law, and Gay-Lussac's law which examines gases when the temperature, pressure, and volume change; P1V1/T1=P2V2/T2
Ideal Gas Law - A law examining the behavior of gases using the gas's pressure(P), volume in liters(V), number of moles(n), gas constant which is dependent on pressure(R), and temperature in Kelvin(T); PV=nRT
